چکیده

This paper presents high-fidelity and simplified computational fluid dynamics modeling approaches within an optimization framework for compound rotorcraft configurations with rotor/propeller aerodynamic interactions. Simulations of axial-flight ducted propeller a rotor/wing test case are first presented to validate the in-house Helicopter Multi-Block 3 solver assess actuator disk/line models main rotor modeling. The then used represent simulations generalized combination. performance is analyzed in detail, large variations observed single blade loading due wake. A model interaction simulation also put forward, inflow distortion metric proposed quantify With help kriging surrogate metric, interferences through disk quantitatively visualized position, thrust, advance ratio. Optimization position under minimized interference rolling/pitching moment constraints attempted using both gradient-based (adjoint) gradient-free (efficient global optimization) approaches. results verified resolved simulations, fluctuations were effectively reduced optimization. work step toward methods vehicle configuration

Parallelization of Rotorcraft Aerodynamics Navier–Stokes Codes

The modiŽ cation of unsteady three-dimensional Navier–Stokes codes for application on massively parallel and distributed computing environments is investigated. Previously, the Eulermode of the Navier–Stokes code TURNS has been parallelized. For the efŽ cient implementationof theNavier–Stokesmode of TURNS onparallel computing systems, several algorithmic changes should be made. The main modiŽ c...

Rotorcraft Aerodynamics Models for a Comprehensive Analysis

Recent developments of the aerodynamics models for the comprehensive analysis CAMRAD II are described, particularly the unsteady aerodynamic models and dynamic stall models, and the free wake geometry calculation. Three models for the unsteady aerodynamic loads in attached flow are implemented: from incompressible thin-airfoil theory, from ONERA EDLIN, and from Leishman-Beddoes. Five dynamic st...

Multidisciplinary Design Optimization of Aerospace Vehicle – Single Engine Rotorcraft

Aerospace vehicle design includes several disciplines with often-conflicting requirements. A formal system design framework is developed in this research where the designer coordinates with disciplinary experts to find an overall optimized design while simultaneously optimizing disciplinary objectives. The overall system objective function chosen in the preliminary design is minimum production ...

Toward a Computational Framework for Rotorcraft Multi-physics Analysis: Adding Computational Aerodynamics to Multibody Rotor Models

This paper presents a computational framework for the integrated simulation of complex multi-physics problems. It results from interfacing existing structural dynamics, multidisciplinary software and different computational fluid dynamics codes by means of a newly developed, broadly general communication scheme that accounts both for solution synchronization and field interpolation. A first app...

Computational Study of Rotorcraft Aerodynamics in Ground Effect and Brownout

When helicopters operate close to the ground in desert conditions, the rotor wake can entrain large amounts of dust into the flow field surrounding the aircraft. This entrainment of dust can result in the potentially dangerous condition known as brownout where the pilot loses situational awareness. Understanding the physics that governs the entrainment of dust from the ground may eventually all...
